BEWARE OF VENICE SEAGULLS

If you’ve ever tried to enjoy a snack in Venice, you may have already met the city’s most persistent locals — the seagulls. These birds aren’t just noisy background scenery; they’re bold, clever, and absolutely fearless. In recent years, seagulls in Venice have become notorious for dive-bombing tourists in broad daylight, snatching sandwiches, gelato, or even full meals straight from their hands.

Restaurants near popular sites like Piazza San Marco have had to adapt, warning guests and even providing protective umbrellas or water sprays to keep the gulls at bay. The problem has gotten so serious that some hotels have hired “falconers” to patrol rooftops with trained birds of prey.

While they may look picturesque soaring over the canals, these seagulls have become aggressive opportunists, perfectly adapted to the city’s high foot traffic and distracted visitors. In Venice, your food isn’t safe unless you’re eating with one eye on the sky.
