These birds aren’t just noisy background scenery; they’re bold, clever, and absolutely fearless. In recent years, seagulls in Venice have become notorious for dive-bombing tourists in broad daylight, snatching sandwiches, gelato, or even full meals straight from their hands.
Restaurants near popular sites like Piazza San Marco have had to adapt, warning guests and even providing protective umbrellas or water sprays to keep the gulls at bay. The problem has gotten so serious that some hotels have hired “falconers” to patrol rooftops with trained birds of prey.
